I am a qualified and registered counsellor who is passionate about working with people to help them achieve rich and satisfying lives in the face of some of life's most challenging circumstances. I have training and experience in both NZ and Australia; most recently working as part of a team in a health care centre, as well as in private practice with both individuals and couples. Although my registration is as a counsellor, I have also completed my training in couple therapy and am a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. I believe we come to know ourselves in relationship with others and this understanding underpins my practice with both individuals and couples and has led to a developing interest in the Conversational Model of psychotherapy. I work as part of the team at Dunedin Psychotherapy and Counselling

What is the Process?

After finding a mutually suitable time I will meet with you, typically for 50 minutes if you are coming by yourself or for an hour and twenty minutes in the case of a couple coming for counselling.

Counselling is a very personal experience and since everyone has a different blend of personality and challenges to face, I will tailor the modalities used to suit your unique set of circumstances.

Throughout life we have learned and built up our responses to a myriad of situations and people usually over a period of many years in order to cope with life. Frequently this involves developing behaviours and ways of dealing with emotion that don't serve us well in the long term.

While these strategies may sometimes work for years, a specific event or time of life may mean we start to find it harder to bounce back. Our physical and emotional health may be affected and it can be hard to find  a way through. Together we examine where you are at present, how you came to be here and what is really important to you in order for you to find ways to improve your situation.

It can be challenging to look at your own emotions, thinking and behaviour patterns but this is the most effective way to make change happen. Most clients find that they need several sessions to deal with the presenting problem and reach their goals. Sometimes exercises done at home between sessions can help the process along.
